Classics “The Sandlot” and “Jaws” return to Melba for ‘Welcome to Summer’ June 23-25! (Posted by Ginger Smith)

Squints’ will have a crush on Wendy and Mayor Larry Vaughn will refuse to close the beaches – and they’ll do it all on the Melba Theater big screen June 23-25.

The Melba Theater has announced plans to show The Sandlot (1993) and Jaws (1975) during a ‘Welcome to Summer’ weekend. This special event will be held in conjunction with the Main Street Batesville Grand Opening, which marks the completion of the new streetscape.

“The ‘Welcome to Summer’ weekend will present a unique opportunity for movie lovers to experience two of the most beloved summer classics of all time, on the big screen as they were originally intended to be shown,” said Joe Shell, co-owner of the Melba Theater.

The Sandlot and Jaws are both iconic movies that help usher in the summer season. The Sandlot synopsis: When Scottie Smalls (Thomas Guiry) moves to a new neighborhood, he manages to make friends with a group of kids who play baseball at the sandlot. Together they go on a series of funny and touching adventures. The boys run into trouble when Smalls borrows a ball from his stepdad that gets hit over a fence.

Jaws synopsis: When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. Ichthyologist Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and grizzled ship captain Quint (Robert Shaw) offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engage in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

Tickets for the ‘Welcome to Summer’ series can preordered online by visiting www.melbatheater.org through Thursday, June 22. Tickets will be available at the Melba Theater Box Office an hour before each showtime.
