Aromatique, the creator of decorative fragrance,  has the wonderful scent of home and all that’s strongly engrained in our hearts as where the heart is.  The name alone is renowned in the US and Canada, bringing nostalgic sweet memories at the mention of the name or a display in some upscale boutique.

After sharing my love of Aromatique with a young lady, she became enthusiastically reminiscent of what it meant to her. Cathy, a physical therapist in training, grew up in Judsonia, Arkansas, and spent a lot of time in Heber Springs in her younger years, where the main Aromatique plant is located.  At some point she became a nanny for a Contemporary gospel band and traveled around the country, and was rather homesick at times.  She remembers with sweet nostalgia when she walked into a Dillard’s department store in Boston, and came upon an Aromatique display.  Much to her embarrassment, tears rolled down her cheeks, and her heart was filled with longing for her home and family at the mere sight and sweet Christmas Spirit scent emanating from the beautiful display.  She proceeded to purchase her own Aromatique  “home away from home” candle, the Christmas Spirit, the first aromatically sensory product which began the successful business of owner, Patti Upton.

I also have a Heber Springs bachelor friend who has the Aromatique fragrances in every room year round, just to make his home smell like home all the time!  Batesville’s Carlee’s  (my hometown) carries this heavenly decorative fragrance and yes, I plan to shop there for Christmas! So be sure and shop Aromatique for your loved ones anywhere you find on the links listed below.

Aromatique

Lifestyle

    • Creator of Decorative Fragrance for the Home. Manufactures decorative fragrances, oils, room sprays, candles, containers and accessories.
    • Over 250 employees work for the company on an annual basis.
    • Aromatique facilities encompass areas covering a total of 400,000 square feet.
    • Products are sold in thousands of gift shops and major department stores throughout the United States and Canada.

Aromatique, the Creator of Decorative Fragrance, was created in 1982 by Patti Upton. Patti gave birth to this dynamic company literally “just for fun.” She mixed together a melange of native botanicals such as acorns, pine cones, gumballs and hickory nuts, fragranced them with spices, oils and ingenuity. Patti called her creation The Smell of Christmas and placed it in a friend’s gift shop. Visitors were enthralled. This extraordinary decorative fragrance quickly turned into an overnight success, and customers were consistently asking for more. Often copied but never duplicated, The Smell of Christmas remains the company’s flagship fragrance. As a leader in the fragrance industry noted, “It is great to create a wonderful fragrance, but to keep that fragrance at the top for over twenty years is amazing.”

With the birth of the company, magic and whimsy gave way to deliberation, as Patti began to envision the birth of a new industry: decorative fragrance. It is not potpourri, the traditional collection of sweet smelling dried flowers. Decorative fragrance is rich and full-bodied, with large distinctive botanicals carefully and artfully arranged with a memorable scent. The product is precisely layered into a primary packaging of cellophane bags. The preferred method of display is large open containers. The company now produces a wide variety of fragrance lines, including candles and decorative accessories.

Aromatique’s vault to the top of the market has been both magical and deliberate, carefully orchestrated with Patti Upton closely monitoring every stage of the development. Annette Green, President Emeritus of the Fragrance Foundation in New York, declares Patti “as one of our industry’s most creative visionaries. Her trailblazing concepts set the stage for the revolution in the enjoyment and appreciation of fragrance in the home, which is driving the public’s interest in fragrance.” Patti was the first to artfully combine visual elements with fragrance. She is unique in that her business is totally focused on fragrances and their ancillary components.

Patti is quick to call Aromatique a “we” company. She attributes Aromatique’s success to the unique collection of people and talent on her staff that has been drawn to the breathtaking natural beauty of the company’s home in Heber Springs, Arkansas, located in the Greers Ferry Lake resort area of the Ozark foothills. Patti has blended these individual creative forces to produce a support staff second to none. In addition, the talents and ingenuity of local employees have been pressed into service to custom-design and build much of the specialized machinery needed to produce many of its products.

Aromatique’s commitment to philanthropic works has helped several organizations throughout the years. The University of Arkansas for Medical Science, one of the top teaching hospitals in the United States, has been the recipient of several special gifts. Nearly a million dollars has been donated to the UAMS Medical Auxillary for the purchase of needed equipment for the hospital. In 2011, a $250,000 contribution by AT&T Arkansas in honor of outgoing board member Patti Upton. This donation gave a significant boost to the nanomedicine research program in the Winthrop P. Rockfeller Cancer Institute at UAMS. Over $1.7 million has been donated to The Nature Conservancy through the sale of “The Natural State” decorative fragrance line. The money has been used to help protect and preserve beautiful natural lands. Nancy DeLamar, Director of External Affairs for the South Central Division of The Nature Conservancy, said, “Through this unique and creative partnership with conservation, the Upton’s found a way to contribute back to the resource — the natural world — from which the success of Aromatique comes.” Many other organizations have benefited monetarily through the donation of products, time and services as well. These charitable donations earned Patti Upton the Distinguished Citizen Award from local NBC affiliate KARK-TV and the Office of the Governor of the State of Arkansas.

Numerous magazines, newspapers and television shows have featured Patti and Aromatique. She appeared twice on “Working Women,” a nationally syndicated television show from Washington, D.C., and “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous” did a segment on Patti and the company. The London Sunday Express and The Washington Post newspapers have both traveled to Arkansas to interview Patti and focus on the company. A Christmas issue of Victoria Magazine featured Patti and the Upton’s Arkansas home. In 1999, the book “The Business of Bliss” featured Patti and the Aromatique Story. An article in the November 2002 issue of “Southern Living” profiled the company and its varied products from decorative fragrance to the bath.

Creating only the highest quality products and keeping Aromatique at the forefront of the decorative fragrance industry has been the company’s mission from the beginning. Patti Upton has been the driving force behind that mission. She states, “The quest for perfection is so important, it sometimes takes up to two years to develop a fragrance. We have always been known for the quality of our fragrances, and as we celebrate our 30th anniversary, our commitment to our customers remains strong and will not change. Aromatique will always provide the best products available and will continue to be the leader in the decorative fragrance industry.”

What is a Decorative Room Fragrance?

  • Aromatique is the Creator of Decorative Room Fragrance. Different from potpourri, Aromatique Decorative Fragrance is bold and definitive, each fragrance creating a distinct ambiance for each room in your home.
  • Aromatique Decorative Fragrances contain large distinctive botanicals designed to serve as decorative accessories.
  • Aromatique?s products contain exact concentrations of specially blended oils to obtain true and lasting fragrance.
  • Aromatique Decorative Fragrances are renewable with Refresher Oils and Room Sprays. Each fragrance line offers companion refresher oils, room sprays, candles, and a variety of accessories.
  • Each bag of Aromatique Decorative Fragrance is hand-packaged with the contents carefully layered and arranged. One bag of Decorative Fragrance requires the work of three people to package.

Why are some Decorative Fragrances stronger than others?

Some fragrances are characteristically more intense than others. For example, The Smell of Christmas (citrus and cinnamon) is more intense than The Smell of Spring (light floral). Also, high humidity and warm temperatures increase fragrance intensity, while low humidity and low temperatures decrease fragrance intensity. Over exposure to sunlight may decrease fragrance intensity and fade botanicals.

What is a fragrance carrier?

Fragrance carriers are the materials in each Aromatique Decorative Fragrance that absorb the oils and enable the fragrance to provide long lasting enjoyment. They are not the same in each Decorative Fragrance. However, they do have one very important characteristic in common:

they must be made of a porous material

. Many fragrances utilize custom-cut and properly cured wood curls and chips as the fragrance “carriers”. Sometimes mushrooms, pourous rocks or man-made stones are used as fragrance carriers.

What is the best way to open a bag of Decorative Fragrance?

  • Aromatique double packs each bag of decorative fragrance by hand, with the contents carefully layered and arranged for the most appealing presentation. The decorative botanicals are placed between two layers of cellophane bags while the remaining bulk fragrance is placed into the inner bag.
  • When opening a new bag of Aromatique Decorative Fragrance, carefully slit the side of the bag and place the bulk decorative fragrance into a large Aromatique bowl. Then peel apart the two bag layers and remove the decorative botanicals. Artfully arrange the decorative botanicals on top.

How do you use Refresher Oil to extend the life of your Aromatique Decorative Fragrance?

Remove the large, more decorative botanicals and set aside. Fragrance oil may discolor the beauty of these botanicals. Place the remaining bulk fragrance into a plastic bag. Add half a bottle of Refresher Oil to contents, close the bag, and shake to distribute the oil. The wooden curls are nature?s sponges, first absorbing and then carrying the fragrance to your home. Allow the contents to absorb the oil, then return the fragrance to the Aromatique container and arrange the decorative botanicals on top.

How often should I refresh my Aromatique Decorative Fragrance?

For home use, Aromatique recommends refreshing your decorative fragrance every month or two. The size of the room as well as the dryness or humidity in the room should be taken into consideration to determine how frequently the product needs to be refreshed.

Product Safety: Decorative Fragrance

  • Caution should be used to keep any Aromatique product containing oils well out of the reach of children and pets. In case of “inquisitive” ingestion or skin contact, call your state’s Poison Control Center or your family physician.
  • Fragrance oils may damage fine finishes. Never place an unopened bag of product directly on a fine finish. Always use a solid or foil lined container when displaying your Aromatique Decorative Fragrance.
  • Warning labels have been placed on all products containing Refresher Oils.

Aromatique Room Sprays – what is their purpose?

  • Add fragrance to a room.
  • Add fragrance to artificial Christmas trees (with lights cool and unplugged).
  • Refresh smoke-laden air.
  • Refresh hotel rooms while traveling.
  • Freshen air after cooking.

What is a Diffuser?

  • Aromatique Diffusers are an attractive way to lightly fragrance a room over an extended period of time. The diffuser oil is gradually absorbed into the reeds which then allows the fragrance to flow into the room.
  • Aromatique’s Reed Diffusers feature ten-inch long reeds which are placed into a decorative clear glass bottle filled with your favorite Aromatique Diffuser Oil.

What sets Aromatique products apart from their competitors?

The uniqueness of Aromatique’s products is evident throughout all stages of production. Aromatique employs talented in-house artisans who design or choose each accessory piece and container. From the initial design phase of each product to its finishing touches, much of the work is done by hand. Finished candles are hand-tied with unique accent ribbons to compliment each fragrance. Each accessory piece is hand packaged as well. High quality and attention to detail are the foundation upon which all Aromatique products are created.

Aromatique Refresher Oils and Room Sprays are companion products to our Decorative Fragrance and are available throughout the year. Refresher Oils are used to renew and restore the Decorative Fragrance or to add fragrance where needed in the home. Room Sprays can be used to enhance the fragrance in any room. Use them to fragrance artificial trees or flowers, cards or stationery, to freshen the air after cooking or refresh hotel rooms while traveling.
