Highway_14_Motorcycle_Marcella_9819The Calico Rock Museum is first and foremost a history museum, but a major part of our history is the art of this area. A lot of the work that we celebrate as art today began as a way of life and survival for our pioneer ancestors, such as blacksmithing, candle making, pottery, etc.

Governor Asa Hutchinson has designated the month of May as Arkansas Heritage Month. This year, the governor has asked Arkansas museums to celebrate Arkansas art as a part of our culture and way of life.

The Calico Rock Museum has joined with the Calico Rock Chamber of Commerce to sponsor an art contest of our local high school students. The subject for their work was Calico Rock history. From the entrants, three winners will be announced and a cash prize awarded to each winner. All entries are currently on display at the Chamber Office and will be on display at the Murphy Gallery in May.

On Saturday, May 14, the museum will host a special exhibit of works by local artists Emma Drown Morgan, Harvey Bufford, and Junior Cobb. Families will have an opportunity to participate in hands-on art projects that day, too. And, we will have an awards presentation to the winners of the high school art contest.

In addition to these celebrations of our local artists, the museum is pleased to announce several new pieces of art that really boost our collection’s importance in the art world:

* “Butterflies” by McKenzie Horton, a very young artist that is one to watch

* “Arnold Makes a Wish” fabric art by Barbara Carlson, a gift by the artist, which was part of our first ever special art exhibition

* “Untitled” by Guy W. Bell, listed by The Arkansas Times top 10 up-and-coming Arkansas artists

* “Gun Show” by Andrew Blanchard, whose works have appeared in Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art

* “Dancing Trees” by Linda Palmer, a critically acclaimed Arkansas artist

*”Kiowa Warrior” by Robert Redbird, one of the most important Native American artists of our time and nationally acclaimed

Come see these great works in our museum and help us celebrate our Arkansas heritage!
