Time is running out to register for Farm to Table Weekend
The Ozark Folk Center State Park is holding a Farm to Table Weekend June 20-21, 2015. Food, farming and eating together are deeply rooted Ozark traditions. Join us to meet local farmers, share recipes, enjoy food and learn how to care for the harvest. This new event will start Saturday morning with a tour of the Heritage Herb Garden in the park, a workshop on root cellaring and other methods of food preservation. The workshop will continue on with round table talks with growers, basic gardening advice, Ozark traditional foods, composting methods and more.
The Farm to Table Dinner will be served Saturday night in the Picnic Pavilion to workshop students and includes locally grown free-range Falling Sky chicken and pork; Meadow Creek greens, Star Gap Farm yellow squash and beans and more. On Saturday, we will board the park’s shuttle bus to tour Star Gap Farm and the Meadowcreek Project and have locally grown lunch.
Preregistration for the Farm to Table weekend is due by June 16, 2015. The cost for the weekend of workshops, Saturday supper, Sunday farm tours and lunch is $139 per person (does not include lodging).
Irish Music and Dance this Weekend
This weekend we highlight the Ozark connection to Ireland through music and dance. Comprised of performers of all ages, St. Louis Irish Arts features traditional dance and music of Ireland. Complete with authentic dress and instrumentation, St. Louis Irish Arts is both an audio and visual experience for fans of traditional Irish music that helped shaped the sound of the Ozarks and beyond.
St. Louis Irish Arts will perform in the Large Auditorium for both Friday and Saturday Evening Performances. The will also perform Saturday afternoon. The Saturday Matinee features the same incredible dancing as the other performances, but the dancers are not in costume.
Yarb Tales – Mycorrhizae
The abundance of rain occurring this spring is both a blessing and a challenge in the garden. Plants are growing without the help of irrigation. Some Mediterranean herbs, roses and other specimen plants have developed fungal diseases. One of the best organisms to help plants resist disease is called mycorrhizal fungi.
These fungi live in partnership with plant roots. As mycorrhizae multiply, they extend hyphae into the surrounding soil. As they travel, these hyphae contact soil nutrients and exude acids and enzymes that make the nutrients soluble so that plants can take them up. Plant roots are surrounded in a protective sheath of mycorrhizae that both encourage friendly organisms and discourage the growth of plant pathogens. This has been shown in field trials.
The best way to encourage mycorrhizal fungi is to make and use compost. Incorporate compost into the soil when planting, apply it on the soil surface under existing plants and spray compost tea on leaves. Compost tea helps to suppress foliar plant diseases.
The Heritage Herb Garden at the Ozark Folk Center State Park graces the grounds with visual colors and textures, sweet and pungent aromas, and helps us to interpret the history of the human use of plants.
