Robert and Barbara Wilson, of Independence, Missouri, have proudly donated a Native American sculpture by Emma Drown Morgan to the Calico Rock Museum and Visitor Center. The piece is the first sculpture ever done by Ms. Morgan who was named among the Top 10 Most Important Folk Artists in America in the 1970’s.
Mr. Wilson was raised in Pineville and knew Ms. Morgan well. He noted that he saw her sculpt the work himself, along with many others that followed. The Wilsons presented the sculpture to Museum Executive Director Gloria Sanders during the Lions Club Rodeo Weekend, which many consider a Calico Rock “homecoming” weekend.
“This piece really bookends the Emma Morgan Collection that we have at the museum. It shows her early work as a sculptor and helps tell the story of how much she loved each piece she did, whether painting or sculpting,” noted Sanders.
The work is on permanent display in the Gwen Murphy Art Gallery. The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information on the Calico Rock Museum and Visitor Center, call 870-297-6100 or visit their website at www.calicorockmuseum.com.
