What is happening at Ozark Folk Center State Park this week?
Music Roots Opens Concert Season
Enjoy an evening of entertainment on April 16, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. in the Large Auditorium as our Music Roots students perform. The Music Roots concert will highlight the musical talents of all the area students. “It’s one of our more popular shows. Groups like Possum Juice, who play in the Craft Village this on Saturday, participated in the Music Roots program and are now regulars on our nightly shows,” said Daren Dortin, Music Director.
Music Roots is a unique music program that allows interested students from across Stone County, Arkansas a chance to learn the traditional string band folk music of the Ozarks. The Music Roots program in Stone County is sponsored by The Committee of 100, The Mountain View Bluegrass Association, The Mountain View School District and the Ozark Folk Center.
During the school year, skilled instructors provide youth with classes in traditional folk instruments: guitar, banjo, autoharp and fiddle. Classes are held during the school day to help students and parents. This innovative program is creating a generation of young folk musicians. These young people are already performing music that came from Europe with the pioneers. These same students will one day be able to pass this music along to future generations.
Music Roots Concert starts at 6:30 p.m. and the doors open at 5:30 p.m. Admission to this concert is free. Click here to

Craft Village Hosts Open House for Folk Festival
While you’re in Mountain View for the Folk Festival, make sure you take some time to visit the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Located just a mile off the Mountain View Courthouse Square, this Arkansas State Park was formed to keep the music, crafts and plant knowledge of the Ozark region alive. Admission to the Village is free for the Folk Festival Open House Friday and Saturday, April 17-18.
The Craft Village at the Ozark Folk Center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and offers more than 20 working shops with master crafts people who make their living creating and selling handcrafted items. The shops include a gunsmith who makes black powder rifles, a knife maker, quilter and many more.
There is plenty of parking in the big lot just off Jimmy Driftwood Parkway. The General Store offers old-timey treats for to you enjoy while waiting for the bus. Make sure to relax and take time to visit the Audrey at the Visitor Information Center next door. Just sit right down and join her in some fine music or share some great stories.
When you’re ready, catch the shuttle up to the Homespun Gift Shop at the entrance to the Craft Village. The Gift Shop has consignments from crafts people from around the state, as well as tshirts and other Folk Center merchandise.
